Sony Cyber Shot DSC-U20

Very simple to use, the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-U20, is for laidback photographers who basically get trigger happy during casual occasions like a party or picnic.

This ultracompact 2-megapixel camera has dimensions of 84.5 x 39.8 x 28.6 and weighs only 118 g making it highly portable.

Among the features incorporated, you will find the scene selection options like Soft Snap, Illumination Snap and Vivid Nature. Flash mode features the standard choices of Auto, Forced Flash and No Flash. You can also avail of the red-eye reduction function if need be.

Special effects like sepia, solarize, black and white, and negative art can also be exploited. The white balance and ISO settings will be automatically adjusted. Further, U20 encompasses a three-area multipoint autofocus and a four-step manual focus with automacro.

Video shooting capabilities of U20 include recording MPEG (160 x 112) movie clips at 8.3 fps. This feature is mainly used for emailing purposes.

Using the VGA burst mode, it is possible to take five pictures at the rate of 2 frames per second.

Images can be stored on the 8MB memory card shipped with the product. This is rather low but if you are willing to shell out a few bucks, you can purchase cards of higher storage capacity.

With a help of a USB cable provided, you can transfer the captured pictures to your PC.

Start up time is pretty quick. That’s not all; the shutter lag on this camera is very much bearable in comparison with many other digital cameras.

It’s not all rosy though. A very important function like the optical zoom has been given skipped by the manufacturers. This is could be major hindrance that turns away prospective customers who are more than happy with the other features. Also, the absence of an optical viewfinder will lead to a shortened battery life as you’ll solely have to depend on the LCD for previewing images which itself suffers when viewed in bright daylight. Flash feature of this camera is also below par.

U20 runs on two rechargeable NiMH AAA batteries. When completely recharged, it is possible to take more than 100 snaps. Be aware that recharging does take longer than expected.

U20 has exceptionally small dimensions coupled with decent image quality. Though the absence of an optical viewfinder is jarring, those looking for a simple camera which is good for casual use can ponder over owning this.

Useful point and shoot camera
If you are a pro looking for a high class camera with all the modern, advanced features, don’t even bother reading this. But if ur just a toddler into the field taking ur first step into the exploring the world of photography, then do read further. An excellently designed camera, this should cater to most of the novices. It has a small megapixel sensor and has all the easy to use features that should be included in a basic point and shoot camera. It is compact gives out pictures that will by no means disappoint the amateurs using it.
