Sony DSC-S85

A conventionally designed camera, the DSC-S85 could be one of the best suited for novices in the field. A combination of both metal and plastic, the camera is robust and quite hefty, not in the least pocket-sized.

Similar to S75, this model measures 4.625 x 2.875 x 2.625 inches (W x H x D), and is healthy at 462 g inclusive of battery. It is equipped with a F2.0 “Carl Zeiss” lens with a focal range of 7 - 21mm, equivalent to 34 - 102mm.

The S85 houses a notable feature of an AF illuminator that enables better focus even in poor or no light conditions. Moving to the rear of the camera, you will find a clear 1.8” LCD that is bright, although it is prone to thumb prints. Another display over the LCD is there to show you the camera’s battery life, the number of remaining shots along with the aperture, flash setting and shutter speed. An optical viewfinder flanks the LCD on the other side.

What’s more, this model makes Sony proud with its impeccable movie modes that produce high-quality videos with audio. However, you will not be able to employ neither the optical nor the digital zoom while taking videos. Another drawback with this camera is its rather vulnerable shutter release button that takes off accidentally very often.

Poor in lowlight else a good camera
I’ve been using the S85 for over a year now and have been very pleased with its overall performance thanks to the plenty of features it includes. Very rugged. Picture quality good but suffers a bit in low light. Shutter delay is another issue. Also the display is not very viewable in extreme bright light.
