Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W12

A black coloured version of DSC-W1, Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W12 encompasses a 5-megapixel sensor in addition to featuring the 3x optical zoom lens and 2.5-inch LCD.

Placement of controls in W12 is intelligible and menu arrangement is comprehensible even for newcomers.

Designed in black, it looks robust but is portable thanks to its weight of 250 g and dimensions (91.0 x 60 x 36.3 mm).

Plenty of useful functions are incorporated in W12. In the scene modes you can employ any one of Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Soft Snap, Landscape, Beach or Candle options.

White Balance settings include the Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent and Incandescent options. Further, in Flash mode you can make use of the Auto, Forced Flash, Slow Synchro and No Flash choices.

Also, there are exposure compensation choices (+/-2.0 EV, 1/3 EV step) and a live histogram acts as a valuable guide.

It is possible to regulate the ISO sensitivity between 100-400 apart from setting it to auto.

Spot and multi-pattern metering options are also available.

In the burst mode, you can take 9 snaps at 1.4fps and using the multi-burst feature you can shoot 16 continuous tiny images.

The 2.5-inch LCD placed in W12 is bright but difficult to use in bright sunshine. Also, the optical viewfinder is too small to be of efficient use.

Shooting movie clips with audio is facilitated in three MPEG modes; (640 x 480 at 30fps), (640 x 480 at 16.6fps) and (160 x 112 at 8.3fps- for email).

W12 comes equipped with a 32MB Memory Stick which is useful. Moreover, this camera is compatible with Memory Stick Pro up to 1GB capacity.

Running on Nickel Metal Hydride Batteries, it will joyfully capture over 600 images.

You can take the first shot 3 seconds after switching on the camera. Recycling eats up a shade over 4 second, too slow for one’s liking. Shutter lag minus the flash is almost negligible at not more than a split second. As expected using the flash, the duration is double.

Reviewing the image quality, snaps clicked in sunlight were seen to be run of the mill. Depressing features include blown out highlights and lack of sharpness. AF lamp stands out producing good output in dim shooting surronundings.

All in all, W12 does enclose several shooting options. But the lack of quality observed in many images thwarts its entry into the league of good 5-megapixel cameras.

Beginners' delight
As the title suggests, this camera is specifically meant for starters. So there aren’t many manual modes. But enough features are present to delight the amateurs. There is a big LCD screen for proper shot framing. 5MP is handy while the Zeiss lens is superb as you all might be knowing. Battery life is very much acceptable. I also like the designing and not least of all the movie mode which is truly among the best. I could print only small size pictures but they did turn out to be very good. Underwater shooting mode is also present. AE lock should have been incorporated. Still, it is a good camera for beginners.
