Sony Cyber Shot DSC-P72

Encompassing a 3x optical zoom and some user friendly features, the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-P72 is yet another addition to Sony’s point-and-shoot capability cameras.

Given sleek silver finishing, the dimensions of 119.5 x 57.7 x 36.8 make it very much compact and it also weighs a reasonable 259 g.

Features of P72 emphasize that this is a camera for beginners. Most of the crucial functions like exposure are fully automatic. Conversely, there are five scene options (Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Landscape, Snow and Beach) for varied shooting conditions. Special effects like Black And White, Sepia, Solarize, and Negative Art can also be added. The ISO range can either be automatic or manually adjusted to 100, 200 and 400. Apart from a spot metering choice, you can also exploit the flash options (Auto, Forced Flash, Slow Synchro and No Flash) and white-balance settings (Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent and Incandescent).

The equipped 3X optical zoom has lens a range of 39mm to 117mm (35mm equivalent) while the aperture range is f/2.8 to f/5.6; a rather disappointing feature.

For shooting in dark conditions, you can take assistance of a radiant AF Illuminator.

In the Multi Burst mode, it is possible to take 16 consecutive snaps. Images can be saved in the JPEG format at two compression levels.

Video shooting capabilities (with audio) of P72 feature two MPEG mode options; 640 x 480 pixel clips at 16fps and 160 x 112 pixel at 8.3fps (for emailing videos).

For storing images, P72 ships with a 16MB Memory Stick.

The start up time of the camera is decent at 3 seconds. Reprocessing between shots in bright light is impressive at 1.8 seconds. (with flash it tended to get worse at 5 seconds)

D72 is equipped with a 1.5-inch LCD which is reasonably bright and also gives a 100 perfect view of the image. Or else, you also have the option of trying out the optical viewfinder which reveals 84 percent of the image. It is possible to change the brightness of both the display and backlight.

Reviewing the image quality, you get mixed vibes. In day light, the pictures look sharp and accurate with good colour representation. But in dim light, the images tend to look awfully jaded. The autofucus is not of much help and to compound matters, the noise disturbance too is very apparent.

For an amateur who doesn’t want to use the camera for too much night photography, P72 can be a reasonable option.

Encompassing a 3x optical zoom and some user friendly features, the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-P72 is yet another addition to Sony’s point-and-shoot capability cameras.

All in one camera
This Sony camera has everything I wanted. A good 3 megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, excellent movie mode. Not only that, it is very easy to use and whoa produces excellent pictures as well. Rechargeable batteries last for long and even the AA type batteries can be put to use. Menu system is very nice which downloading features also don’t take up a lot of time. Purchasing a memory stick for this camera is also very cheap. The best compliment I can pay to this camera is I did not find any fault with it. Truly excellent camera.
