Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W1
An ultracompact 5-megapixel camera from Sony, DSC-W1 features the Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 3x optical zoom lens with a 2.5-inch LCD and a of variety of features.
Placement of controls is shrewd and W1 ships with plenty of useful shooting options which can be accessed courtesy the mode dial. Menus are straightforward and very much user friendly.
Delightfully styled, it is portable enough thanks to its weight and dimensions. (250 g and 91.0 x 60 x 36.3 mm respectively).
Amongst the major features of the camera are the scene modes in which you can opt for Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Soft Snap, Landscape, Beach or Candle depending on the shooting conditions.
Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent and Incandescent are the White Balance presets offered. You can use the Flash features (Auto, Forced Flash, Slow Synchro and No Flash) as also the exposure compensation choices (+/-2.0 EV, 1/3 EV step). To assist you further, a live histogram is also provided.
Employ the manual modes to adjust the contrast, sharpness etc. ISO sensitivity of W1 is either auto or between 100- 400. Spot and Multi-pattern metering options are also available.
The 2.5-inch LCD suffers when viewed in bright daylight. To add to it, the optical viewfinder too is small and doesn’t deliver the desired results.
Video capturing features (with sound) include shooting movies of 640x480 resolution at 30fps and 16.6fps. Another option which is specifically for emailing captures 160 x 112 pixel shots at 8.3fps.
For storing images, a 32MB Memory Stick comes with this camera. You can always purchase higher capacity Memory Stick Pro cards up to 1GB.
Battery life of W1 is exceptional. Powered by the 2 AA Nickel Metal Hydride Batteries, you will get over 600 shots.
Using the burst mode, it is possible to shoot 9 images at 1.4fps while in multi-burst segment you can capture 16 small sized pictures continually.
Shot-to-shot time in W1 is not too good at 4.03 second. Before that, staring up the camera will take a little under 3 seconds. Shutter lag without flash is less than a second and using it, the delay is more than 2 seconds.
Pictures taken in bright daylight have decent sharpness but nothing extraordinarily great.
Moreover, some of the highlights are blown out while pictures look dull in certain cases. A silver lining is the AF lamp used for flash objects which delivers good results.
Having some notable shortcomings with regards to the picture quality, W1 fails to leave the desired impact.

Impressive!!!
There are cameras and cameras and there is the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W1. Yes it’s an absolutely top class camera. It has a massive 2.5 inch LCD screen and as many as 9 camera modes. Also, the camera performance is rather speedy. Picture quality is xcellent both in the low light and bright light. Movie mode is also among the best you will find. Only 32 MB memory is disappointing. But there are loads and loads of features to be experimented with. What r u waiting for??? Start clicking.
