Sony Cyber Shot DSC-S60

Equipped with the Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens, this 4.1-megapixel camera is meant for casual use like birthday parties or picnics.

Featuring a 3x optical zoom, it is reasonably compact having dimensions of 96.6 x 64.4 x 40.1 mm though slightly heavyweight at 249 g.

S60 ships with a 2-inch LCD which is primarily used for pictures previewing and proper framing of shots. In addition, you can also capitalize on the optical viewfinder incorporated.

Using the 3x optical zoom, you can shoot good quality pictures. There is also a digital zoom feature. But it’s better used sparsely or naturalness of the pictures might be lost.

A 5-Area Multi-Point Autofocus delivers better image focusing. Shutter speed of S60 ranges from 30 seconds to 1/1000 second. Shooting in the dark is also possible courtesy the AF Illuminator.

For image capturing in varied environments, seven scene modes (Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Soft Snap, Landscape, Beach, Snow, and Candle) can be exploited.

White Balance settings like Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent and Incandescent are also found.

Flash options consist of Auto, Forced Flash, Slow Synchro and No Flash. Red-eye Reduction can also be used for better results while using the flash.

Slow Shutter Noise Reduction captures images in two exposures and subtracting the two, you get a better final outcome.

Apart from an auto IS0 feature, the sensitivity can also be manually adjusted between 80, 100, 200 and 400.

For capturing high speed motion pictures, a burst mode can be located where you can shoot four consecutive images at 0.7 fps.

Compatible with shooting movie clips inclusive of audio, S60 has three MPEG mode options (640x480 at 30fps & 16.6fps) and (160x112 at 8.3fps-for emailing clips).

Storing of images can be done on the 32MB in-built memory itself. But it you think it’s not enough, better opt for the Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO media with superior storage capabilities. The facility to transfer images from internal to the external memory is also provided.

A feature called Real Imaging Processor Technology is incorporated which, apart from enhancing the image quality, perks up the camera response time, minimizes the shutter lag and also improves the battery strength.

2 AA batteries supplied can shoot more than 100 images. Purchasing the NiMH rechargeable batteries will give you over 500.

Picture quality is what you expect from a 4-MP camera; adequate sharpness and precise colour rendition.

An excellent option for amateur photographers.

Astonishing looks, good performance
This camera looks stunning. But then there are many others in the market look much more dazzling but still end up as style over substance. So I did have fears that this too would turn out to be the same. Thankfully it hasn’t. Images end up looking very very pleasant. The 2inch LCD is wonderful for framing shots. Image stabilization feature was required according to me. Rechargeable battery comes in handy. USB connection is useful and the 32 MB internal memory shouldn’t be a reason to complain.
