Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P5

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P5 has got to be the slimmest in the P series unveiled by Sony; the camera is so small that you might misplace it if you are not careful! It’s got a 3.2-megapixel resolution and 3x Optical Zoom plus the 6x Precision Digital Zoom that allows you to get real close to the subjects. Sony's proprietary Super HAD CCD ensures decent lighting even in less than ideal conditions.

It does this by directing a beam of red laser on the sensor and filling up the lens with this extra light. The P5 weighs just about 212 grams. Other corresponding measurements are 11.43 x 3.7 x 5.3 cm. The InfoLITHIUM battery has got a good life and does not need frequent recharging, but it must be said that if you happen to run out of charge midway through an important event, you will have to hunt for InfoLITHIUM battery only, other AA's do not work here.

The camera has got an Optical Viewfinder, something that will be widely welcomed plus the MPEG Movie-HQ. There is no facility for voiceover in the P5, but the segment at which it is targeted does not need it anyway. It has also got a USB Terminal, so the connectivity requirements are suitably taken care of here. The 8MB Memory Stick that is included is a tad smaller than expected, but gives adequate coverage when required.

Though the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P5 has some commendable features, it ends up being an amateur's delight rather than a professional's passion.

I HATE IT
This has to be the worst camera I have purchased by a long long way. Designing of the camera is the only good thing I could find. Features are awfully bad. You find a pathetic 3 megapixel sensor and 3x Optical Zoom. Digital zoom feature isn’t of much use. The battery life is as bad as it can get. I found an optical viewfinder but that too is useless. After all this, I don’t feel the need to say that the picture quality is bad. It is horrendous in low light. And not only that, I couldn’t find any manual controls. And what on earth can you do with an 8MB memory stick. Video mode is the only saving grace. I’m just fed up of it and will get rid of it very soon.
