Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T5
An ultracompact offering from Sony, DSC-T5 features a 5.1 Megapixel sensor as also a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 3X optical zoom lens and a 5 area multi-point auto focus among others.
Available in four different colours, it has a glossy design with dimensions of 93.5 x 60 x 20.3mm and weighs 136g (inclusive of battery and memory card) making it a rather lightweight camera.
Using the menu, which can be displayed in 15 languages, allows you to access the scene (Magnifying glass, Night, Night portrait, Candle, Backlight, Landscape, Sports, Beach, Snow and Fireworks) and manual modes. Among the programmable features of T5 are the EV (2EV in 0.3 steps), metering, white balance, ISO (64 to 400), flash level and a few more.
Burst mode is a let down delivering just 9 images at approximately 1.5fps. In lower resolutions, you can get more than 83 shots in 60 seconds. Macro mode enables capturing images from a close range of 6cm.
Unfortunately, the more experienced shooters are likely to stay away from T-5 due to the absence of aperture or shutter speed settings.
T5’s LCD doesn’t disappoint in bright light. But the presence of a viewfinder would have been so much better.
The flash can cover a maximum range of 2.5m, good feature for photography in moonlit conditions.
Easy printing is facilitated via the PictBridge technology combined with the USB connection which ensured printing without the need to connect to your PC.
Video shooting can be done in the MPEG-VX format and at a resolution of 640 x 480 with a satisfactory 30fps speed. Video editing capabilities of T5 include trimming and dividing the movie clips.
T5 comes equipped with a 32MB storage space which can be utilized in case you don’t have a memory card or if it gets full.
While the shutter lag of 1 second isn’t worrisome, the 2.5 second start-up is also reasonably good. When not using the flash, shot-to-shot timing is 1.5 seconds (3 seconds with flash). Autofocus too is generally around 1.5 seconds in most settings.
The lithium-ion battery is exceptional giving you much more than 200 shots even after using most of the battery consuming features.
Quality of images shot using the T5 is good at best. The pictures had good colour representation and accuracy but weren’t sparkling enough to make you drool over it. Noise becomes increasingly apparent along with the rising ISO level but fringing is very much negligible.
With speedy operations and easy to use features, T5 can be especially of good use to the novice photographers.

A recommended point and shoot camera
This is an excellent point and shoot camera in the true sense. This Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T5 produces images of the highest order. Also, it looks really nice thanks to its off beat designing and even its size is small enough making it very good for carrying it wherever you go. All the features are simple as expected from a point and shoot camera. I tried out the video shooting feature and was more than impressed with its quality. A better memory could have been the icing on the cake. All in all, this is a worthy camera if u want a simple point and shoot one b’coz it’s not too heavy on ur pocket either.
