Sony Cyber-shot DSC V3

Possessing the 4X Carl Zeiss zoom lens and a rather large 2.5’’ LCD, the 7-megapixel DSC V3 has ample of features to attract both the novices and professionals but the picture quality isn’t top grade.

Designed in black with a magnesium alloy plastic body, it’s very heavy at 410.0 g with the battery and Memory Stick in place.

Except for a couple like the exposure-compensation and AE Lock buttons, most controls are conveniently placed and all the crucial functions can be operated via the menus which are very speedy and user friendly too.

V3’s Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 4X zoom has the customary range of 34mm to 136mm (35mm equivalent). You will come across four exposure modes and seven scene modes. Also present are three light metering options while exposure compensation includes 1/3-stop increments to + or - 2EV.

White-balance settings comprise Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent, Incandescent and Flash. ISO sensitivity can either be set to auto or you can manually adjust it in the range between 100-800.

Shooting in burst mode will give you 8 pictures at 2.5fps, while MultiBurst will deliver 16 lower-resolution pictures at 30fps.

Movie recording capacity of V3 is reasonably good with the ability to shoot 640x480 resolution clips at 30fps.

Storing pictures or video clips are facilitated by making use of the Memory Stick Pro or CompactFlash media. Images are compatible with both the JPEG and TIFF formats. RAW files can be converted to RGB images via the Image Data Converter 2.0.

A couple of novel Sony features include NightShot (taking infrared photos) and NightFraming modes (using infrared for improved LCD viewing).

V3’s LCD comes in handy in most shooting environs but the optical viewfinder is tiny and also not radiant enough.

Performance of the camera is generally quick even as the start up time of just under 4 seconds is not satisfactory. Recycling while taking is speedy at 1.5 seconds as so is the 0.5 second lag, thanks to the autofocus feature which performs exceptionally in low light. Using the RAW format, the delay between taking two shots is a horrendous 12 seconds.

Image quality of V3 is decent with adequate brightness. But fringing and light barrel distortion is evident at places. Thankfully, noise disturbance is bearable even at ISO 800.

Running on 4.4WHr lithium-ion battery, V3 is likely to give you approximately 730 shots, provided you use the flash moderately.

If only the picture quality of V3 was better, it would have been a highly recommenced camera.

Gr8 pictures, gr8 battery, gr8 camera
I searched the net for numerous reviews and finally found that this was the perfect camera for me. There were many things that impressed me about this camera. Not least of all the giant LCD screen. But apart from that even the overall camera performance is good. Even the camera built is rather lustrous and trendy. The black colouring makes it look a cool, man’s camera. Quality of pictures are highly exceptional. Pictures are definitely on the brighter side compared to my previous cameras. A word of praise has to be reserved for the battery like which is mark my words PHENOMENAL. I managed to snap off over 400 pictures before the battery status started receding. A memory card wud definitely have been an added advantage. But that doesn’t take away the fact that it is a gr8 camera.
