Sony Cyber Shot DSC S40

Perfect for beginners, Sony DSC S40 is a click-and-shoot capability camera integrating a 4-megapixel sensor, a 3x optical zoom and delivering excellent results.

The rectangular shape of S40 doesn’t give it any sort of unique appeal. Its 99 x 51 x 34mm dimensions make it too big to be carried in a pocket even as its weight of 132 g is bearable.

User interface of S40 is reasonably user friendly. While the menu is comprehensible, a few of the dials might take time getting used to. A 1.5’’ LCD exhibits crucial information relating to battery and memory status apart from encompassing an optical viewfinder. But the display is just too small for suitable viewing.

As mentioned in the beginning, S40 is equipped with a 3x optical zoom which has a range between 32-96mm (35mm equivalent). To supplement this, you also get a 6x digital zoom and a 10x smart zoom.

Disappointingly, the camera does not include a specific macro mode though S40 can take shots from 12cm distance.

In auto mode, the camera selects the best scene setting for a particular shot from among the Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Soft Snap, Landscape, Beach etc.

S40 comes equipped with an in-built flash (3.8m max range) for enhancing camera performance in dim light conditions. Flash modes comprise automatic, always on, always off and slow synchro.

Video shooting takes place at 640x480 resolution at a speedy rate of 30 fps.

Burst mode enables capturing 4 shots at a rate 0.7 seconds per shot.

Adding colour effects like black & white and sepia to images is also facilitated.

There are also white balance settings like Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent and Incandescent.

ISO sensitivity range of S40 is between 80-400.

Except while taking macro shots (no dedicated macro mode), the camera functionality was top class. Shooting in both bright and dim conditions resulted in excellent returns. Focus, colour accuracy and sharpness all are superior. Noise disturbance is pretty much negligible at most ISO settings.

Starting up this camera takes a decent 2.22 seconds while the shutter lag is more than impressive at 0.19 (minus flash). Recycling without the flash was also more impressive take just more than 1 second.

S40 is powered on 2 AA batteries. For storage purposes, it encloses a 32 MB internal memory with which you can capture more than 15 pictures. Additionally, you can purchase either the Memory Stick or Memory Stick Pro card.

With exceptional image quality and a user-friendly interface, S40 is a first-rate entry level digital camera from Sony.

Perfect for beginners, Sony DSC S40 is a click-and-shoot capability camera integrating a 4-megapixel sensor, a 3x optical zoom and delivering excellent results.

Worst camera I’ve ever seen
It’s a shame that a company as reputed as Sony has come out with such a horrendous camera. In fact before I bought this I was pretty much a fan of Sony. But not anymore. The camera did not last for more than a weak before goin 2 repairs b’coz of some faulty functioning. Imagine??? Some pictures were pretty good but unfortunately many were really poor. Virtually everything abt this camera is bad. The megapixel sensor, zooming functions and even the LCD is among the bad ones you will get 2 see. The only good thing I liked abt the camera was its designing. But even here, I found the size was too big. Close shots taken, well I better not talk abt them. And I think even the videos taken were bad enough to demerit a mention. A doubt if they really shoot at 30 fps. Personally, I feel this is a really bad offering from Sony and wud strongly recommend that u don’t purchase it.
