Samsung DIGIMAX i5
Samsung DIGIMAXi5 is an ultracompact camera with a 5-megapixel sensor and plenty of point-and-shoot functions.
Available in four shades, it has an impressive design with the curved edges adding to its style quotient.
Weighing 133g with dimensions of 89.3 x 59.8 x 17.3mm, it’s available with a pouch which makes it extremely portable.
Most of the crucial functions can be accessed through the controls placed on top and on the side of the camera. There are quite a few shooting modes that can be activated courtesy the Mode dial. You can always use the menus for the remaining functions.
Among the features incorporated, you will find Safety Flash (shooting indoors), a 3x optical zoom and a number of helpful effects. There are 11 useful scene modes (Portrait, Children, Landscape, Closeup, Text, Sunset, Dawn etc but the absence of the Sports mode is very disappointing.
Further, you will come across manual modes for selecting aperture and shutter speeds. Flash of i5 is between 20cm and 2.4m in wide-angle mode.
In the burst mode, you have the ability to capture continuous 5 megapixel shots at 0.9fps, which is not exceptional by any means. Super macro mode facilitates you to take pictures from a short range of 1cm.
An interesting feature is that you can click your photos in three or four different frames to make one single picture.
Video capabilities of i5 are striking. You can record 640 x480 resolution clips at 30fps in the MPEG-4 format. Some movie editing features are also present.
i5’s 2.5-inch LCD is good in gloomy conditions but under sunlight its performance is dissatisfactory. To compound matters, you won’t find a viewfinder.
Starting up i5 takes 2.5 seconds. Reprocessing needs 1.5 seconds minus the flash and using the flash, the duration is. Shutter lag is decent at 1 second and autofocus of 1.5 seconds too isn’t very bad.
The Lithium-ion battery will give 150 shots when fully charged. Apart from an extra battery, you are also provided with a 256MB SD card.
In general, i5’s picture quality is nice but for the Safety Flash usage which reduces the clarity of photographs. Auofocus isn’t good enough to give marvellous dim light pictures.
Visible Noise disturbance came into the fray only at ISO 400 and chromatic aberrations is very much negligible.
In conclusion, the overall functioning of Samsung DIGIMAX i5 is not disappointing. But the absence of a viewfinder and its poor performance in dark conditions certainly is.

High fives for i5
A few months back, I was looking for a camera that was good looking, reasonably priced and most importantly also very portable. I scanned through a lot of cameras shops but was not satisfied. Even when I decided to buy the i5, I was not quite sure whether I was making the right choice. But after using it for a month or so all my reservations about the camera dispersed. This i5 is has turned out to be almost the perfect camera I was looking for. It’s compact with excellent image quality and good lowlight features. I even enjoyed using the movie mode especially since it is also possible to sue the zooming features here. The LCD too deserves a word of praise. Its high fives for i5.
