Nikon D70 Kit
A 6-megapixel camera with some exceptional features, swift functioning and above all supreme picture quality, the D70 kit is inclusive off the 18-70 mm lens (27mm to 105mm- 35mm equivalent).
With the CompactFlash card, battery, and the 18mm-to-70mm lens in place, the D70 weighed a tad less than 2.5 pounds. Overall, it has a sturdy feel and can be gripped easily to perform the shooting mechanics.
Placement of controls enhances the user friendliness of the camera. Most of the commonly used features can be accessed through the dials. But the presence of too many buttons can lead to chaos. So reading the user guide should be the first step before you start experimenting with your camera.
The D70 is handy for both the beginners and the experienced photographers. For the former type, there are fully automatic modes while the latter species can exploit the Vari-Program scene modes in which altering the brightness, colour concentration and contrast is possible.
In the manual and semi manual exposure modes, the shutter speeds range between 30 seconds to 1/8,000 of a second. Apart from the automatic, preset, and manual white-balance options, you can also use the exposure, flash, and the 5-point autofocus feature.
Performance of D70 can be rated as satisfactory. The shutter lag experienced is very acceptable at 0.4 seconds. Start up time of the camera is also good at just 0.6 seconds. The JPEG photos took approximately 1 second between shots while shooting in the RAW format a bit more than that. Reprocessing using the flash disappointed as it used up three seconds.
Continuous shooting mode of D70 was more than impressive. Using CompactFlash card in the JPEG format, you can shoot 20 snaps at 1.6 fps. Shooting in the RAW format isn’t as productive though delivering a horrendously low 3 images at 3.2fps.
Positives are back with the autofocus which gives precise outputs in the challenging low-light surroundings.
Using the 18mm-to-70mm lens, D70 delivers superlative image quality with the correct amount of exposure, correct colour reproduction, good white balance, very little noise and fringing almost non-existent. Only a handful of pictures look slightly jaded.
The camera’s ISO range is between 200- 1,600. But even at maximum sensitivity of 1,600, the image quality distortion is very low. Probably the only negative feature of the picture quality was the presence of chromatic aberration.
With excellent image quality, abundance of useful settings and magnificent performance of the 18-70mm lens, Nikon D70 has to be termed as exceptional.
