Nikon Coolipix 8400

Incorporated with an 8-megapixel sensor, 3.5x optical zoom, and a swiveling LCD screen, the Nikon Coolpix 8400 is wells suited for capturing wide-angle images thanks to its 24-85mm lens.

With a magnesium-alloy framework, 8400 is compact and weighs a shade over 17 ounces. Placement of controls is pretty reasonable. You should be able to locate most of the frequently used features. You have the facility to select 6 out of the 21 options from the menu which you can view on the main display.

Nikon Coolpix 8400's wide zoom lens is undoubtedly the centre of attraction among the features. Its 24mm (equivalent) focal length gives you a striking 84-degree angle of view. The maximum aperture range is between f/2.8 and f/4.9.

8400 comes equipped with 15 scene modes like Portraits, Party/Indoor, Night Portraits, Beach/Snow, Landscape etc.

Exposure options feature four automatic exposure modes apart from the metering option. In the manual and aperture priority mode, the shutter speeds range from 8 seconds to 1/3,000 second.

In macro mode, you can take shots from a distance of 1.2 inches while in ultra-high-speed burst mode, you can capture clips at 30fps.

A Best Shot Selector feature facilitates you to capture many shots and then automatically saves the superior one after evaluation.

A similar function called autobracketing can bracket exposure or white balance and also save three or five deviations from which you can select your favourite.

The five-shot-buffer routine helps you take snaps continuously at 0.7fps but saves only the last five after you have finished.

A camera editing option allows you to reduce picture resolution for emailing purposes.

Videos clips can be taken at 640x480 resolutions (30fps) for 1 minute or at 320x240 pixels (15fps) and even 5fps for slow clips. In time-lapse mode, you can take 1,000 shots with five preset intervals between 1 to 60 minutes.

Start-up time of 8400 was bad at 4.8 seconds while recycling between shots without were better at 2.9 seconds (without flash). In bright light, the shutter lag was 0.6 and in dim conditions too 1.1 wasn’t too disheartening.

Photo quality isn’t the greatest. At the same time, it is not atrocious either. Manual white balance performed well. Noise was very much noticeable once past IS0 100. Fringing and chromatic aberration haven’t been eliminated completely. Red eye reduction feature works magnificently well though.

If you are looking for a camera with excellent wide angle capabilities, Nikon Coolpix 8400 could definitely be an option.

Coolpix is a cool camera... nearly
I’ve been using the Coolpix 8400 for the last few months and am reasonably happy with it. It has a very efficient 8-megapixel sensor which gives out nice images and somehow, I quite like the swivelling LCD. Also impressive is the 24-85 mm range of the 3.5x optical zoom. Am I getting 2 technical? Ok let’s come to the point. Except for noise irritation at higher ISO levels and a bit of purple fringing, the overall image quality isn’t disappointing. Start up and shot to shot times are a bit slow. But if you can bear that, 8400 is capable of snapping nice pictures.
