Nikon COOLPIX 4500

An upgrade to the Coolpix 995, Nikon Coolpix 4500 is a 4-megapixel camera with a 4X optical-zoom, a swivelling lens and many shooting options.

Though the swivelling feature of 995 has been retained, Coolpix 4500 has an improved user interface with lesser buttons. Even so, finding some of the features are hard as some modes can be located only after navigating thoroughly through the menu.

The 4-megapixel camera is fitted with a useful aperture range f2.6-to-f5.1 and its 4X zoom lens has a good focal range.

LCD of 4500 has good clarity even when exposed to bright sunshine. The optical viewfinder isn’t bad either, though providing only 80 percent coverage.

You will come across extensive features in the Coolpix 4500. There are exposure modes, metering modes and a 5-point autofocus feature. Also, the manual controls are useful for sharpening the images and adjusting the contrast settings.

In automatic mode, you can utilise the 16 scene modes.

In Macro mode, the camera is top class as high quality pictures taken from a distance of 0.8 inches.

A feature called Small Pic is useful for emailing. This function automatically resizes the high-resolution images so that they can be emailed after downloading on a computer.

The onboard flash of 4500 is capable of going up to a maximum of 9.8 feet, highly impressive. You can also make use of the slow-sync setting.

It is possible to take save uncompressed images in the TIFF format with this Coolpix. But the one slight disadvantage here is that it takes 30 seconds for the camera to process and save the pictures as TIFFs on to the CompactFlash card. Hence the presence of RAW file saving option saving would have been highly useful.

Start-up time of Nikon Coolpix is not as quick as expected. And the autofocus function also performs rather slowly. A brief shutter delay is also evident. But to make up for all this the camera does give out good results in most shooting conditions.

Battery wise, the rechargeable lithium-ion battery is superb capturing 80 high-resolution JPEG shots. In addition, the camera also works with the nonrechargeable 2CR5 lithium camera battery; which is an added advantage.

Absence of the RAW file saving option and tediousness of locating some features from the menu are definitely quite big weaknesses. Put that behind you and 4500 is a winner in terms of the superior picture quality it delivers.

Nice camera with minor flaws
Excellent is how I would like to describe the Nikon Coolpix 4500. Starting from the designing to the image quality everything is good. There are plenty of useful features to be found. It has the 4-megapixel sensor and 4x optical zoom. LCD comes in handy for framing the shots. But I did not find the viewfinder of much use. Macro mode impressed me. The feature I found most depressing was the flash. But that’s about the only fault in the camera. Battery life of the camera is very very good. I won’t say the camera performance is swift but the good pictures do make up for the small irritants present.
