Nikon COOLPIX 8700
Nikon Coolpix 8700 is an 8-megapixel camera incorporating plenty of shooting options. Though compact and lightweight, designing of 8700 is rather faulty. The magnesium-alloy body is superlative and most of the commonly used features can be accessed without opening the menus. But there are just too many controls cramped in together. As a result, you unintentionally end up pressing the wrong button time and again, more so because all the controls are identical. Using the menus too is a difficult task.
Feature wise, 8700 is quite rich. The 8X zoom lens has a range from 35mm to 280mm (the 35mm equivalent), and a maximum aperture of f/2.8 to f/4.2.
Among the useful functions, you can utilize the 12 scene modes and the customary choices like auto, shutter-priority, and manual modes. Also, there are four metering modes. Using the three or five frame autoexposure feature is also permitted.
With 8700 it is possible to shoot pictures in JPEG, TIFF, or RAW formats and save them on CompactFlash cards. Among them, JPEG files are compliant with three compression levels and eight resolutions.
The movie mode allows you to create videos of 640x480-pixel resolution at the rate of 30 fps for a maximum duration of 30 seconds.
In a unique feature called time-lapse movie mode you can shoot more than 1,000 still photographs at particular intervals and later bond them together to get a QuickTime clip.
Inspite of the range of features, the final result isn’t extraordinary. First things first, starting up the camera itself takes more than 5 seconds. Reprocessing with JPEG takes 2.5 seconds, 8 in the RAW format and an atrocious 20 seconds using TIFF. Some consolation can be drawn from reasonable shutter lag of 0.7 seconds.
Autofocus performs appreciably well in bright light, but the same cannot be said about its dim-light performance.
The 1.8 LCD encompasses a swivelling feature and is reasonably viewable in most surroundings. EVF too isn’t bad as both display 97 percent coverage.
Flash works well even though it has a restricted peak range of 13.5 feet.
Photos taken with 8700 are good. The camera impresses most on account of its white balance and precise colour representation.
Coming to the noise factor, it is restrained until you try out ISO 400.
Fringing and chromatic aberrations are evident in some of the shots.
While the camera does include plethora of options, it falters with regards to the incomprehensible designing and pretty much average performance of many features.

Wowwwwww… gr8 camera
This is a really really good camera. Among the best you’ll find around. It delivers superb quality pictures in all type of shooting conditions. Build quality is of the highest order. And there are features you will definitely adore. There is an 8-megapixel sensor, 35 mm equivalent range, 12 scene modes. I quite like the movie mode too. While the speed of shooting is not great, the final result with regards to the picture quality is quite reasonably good. Camera performs well in most conditions. Only feature which is not up to the mark is the autofocus system. That apart, this shouldn’t disappoint you. It would go as far as saying it’s a great camera.
