Canon Digital IXUS 50
A successor to IXUS 40, the Canon Digital IXUS 50 is an excellent ‘point and shoot’ capability camera. Apart from being ultra compact in size, the exceptional styling of IXUS 50 gives it a very sophisticated look.
The 3x optical zoom lens, in perfect sync with the 5.0 Megapixel sensor, produces excellent results with great image quality up to a maximum of A3 size. Prints can be taken on any PictBridge compatible photo printer with the help of the Print/Share button.
There are 10 different shooting options which can be made good use of. They are Auto, Manual, Digital Macro, Portrait, Night Snapshot, Kids & Pets, Indoor, Underwater and, a newly introduced My Colours mode. The auto-focus system (AiAF) is especially impressive.
But one of the exceptionally brilliant features is the novel My Colours option. Here it is possible to play around with colours which will definitely test your creative instincts in a big way. You can change the colours for an image, add tanned effects, highlight a specific colour and change all the other colours to black and white. Colour swapping feature present isn’t a bad option either and there a whole lot more that will keep you energized.
And if My Colours was mind blowing, another imaginative feature on the 2 inch LCD- QuickBright- wasn’t far behind. The viewfinder on this camera is really hazy making it difficult for accurate viewing. And here’s where the QuickBright feature come into use. This function is activated by pressing the display button. In a matter of seconds, the LCD is illuminated which increases the visibility of the camera to a good extent. But on the negative side, the LCD shouldn’t be as bad in the first place.
Editing softwares shipped with IXUS 50 comprise the ZoomBrowser EX and ImageBrowser for picture cropping and modifying image essentials like brightness and contrast. Also check out the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY which grants you precious 100MB space online.
Technologically, IXUS 50 is incorporated with a DIGIC II processor, which increases the camera speed to a great extent and iSAPS, which acts a good assistant.
Movie capabilities are good with the facility to record and playback VGA movie clips at 30 fps (inclusive of audio) with a maximum storage capacity of 1GB. You can also record QVGA clips at 60 fps and play them back in slow motion.
Though many of the predecessor (IXUS 40) functions are repeated, the inclusion of My Colours and QuickBright feature does increase its versatility.

Not recommended at all
Before purchasing this camera, I was a big Canon fan. Unfortunately my opinion has changed a bit now. It’s small in size and looks ok too. But that’s about the few positives I found. The shooting modes were the standard one but the picture quality some how doesn’t match up to some other sophisticated camera according to me. LCD too disappointed which was not bright enough. Night shots were especially bad as the autofocus feature didn’t make an impact. Worse still, I used the movie function only to be saddened further by its limited ability. I wudn’t recommend this to anyone.
