Samsung A800

Samsung A800 is a stylish clamshell very much in the T100 mould. The only noticeable difference is the absence of the colour screen in A800. Otherwise, most of the other features are pretty much the same.

For a clamshell, the weight of only 68 g is excellent and even the dimensions of 80 x 40 x 22 mm are small enough to enhance portability. The overall build is extremely durable.

Designing of A800 is similar to most Samsung clamshells with a distinct keypad and the navigation key above it. Menus are pretty intuitive and hence navigating shouldn’t be too much of a concern.

Having a bright aqua-blue dual display is more than useful. The outer screen display’s the called ID to help you decide whether to attend a particular call or not. In addition, the external display also reveals helpful features like date, time, battery status and signal strength. Though the internal screen is not in colour, it does have a reasonably acceptable resolution of 128 x 128 pixels.

Among the positives of the phone, there are 40-voice polyphonic and customizable ringtones which are of good quality. The tonal quality too is extremely clear with great reception to boot.

Using the internet is facilitated via the WAP 1.2.1. The voice dialling and speed dialling feature are not novel. But their presence is welcome nonetheless.

A800’s phonebook has the capacity to store 200 names which is not bad at all.

Like in all cells, here too you can make use of the standard organizer functions like clock, calendar and alarm.

But there a few features which could be highly disappointing for the mobile users. The absence of a camera is very much visible. Also messaging is not quite easy as the predictive T9 text input has been positioned as the default mode. Another irritant could be the warning sounds that play every time you to alter your setting or delete some matter. That fact that this function cannot be switched off is pretty incomprehensible.

There are three pre-loaded games but none really are exiting enough.

On an average, the standard battery gives talktime of close to three hours and standby period of 4-5 days.

Being dualband capable only, it cannot be recommended for constant travellers. And the dearth of connectivity options will not captivate the businessmen.

Despite having some reasonable features, A800 will cater only to those looking for a lightweight device with the basic functions. But the absence of colour screen might even make some of them turn away.

Waste of time, energy and money
I’ve only owned this phone for about a month and I’m already regretting it. There are some really treacherous features of the 800; the menus are really confusing for a start. It looks good but the performance isn’t the same from any angle. The screen is not in colour. Every time I try to delete something, it makes a horrible noise. Can anybody tell me how to switch it off? Ringtones are yuck, yuck, yuck. I’ve vowed never to use the messaging feature. Yes it’s that bad. There is no camera and still the battery life is horrendous. In spite of reading this if you desire to buy it, GOD BLESS U… Amen.
