Samsung A300
A flip phone from Samsung, A300 has a dual display with dimensions of 81 x 42 x 22 mm. It weighs a mere 83 g making it extremely comfortable to hold in your hands. But the popping out external antenna doesn’t facilitate carrying it in a pocket.
Having a visible blue backlighting, the outer display is useful in more than one ways. Apart from exhibiting information regarding time, date, battery and signal strength, it alerts you of messages received, missed calls and incoming call details can also be viewed on the outer display. This lets you decide whether you plan to attend the call or not.
While the phone looks great when the flip is closed, opening it you are able to view the internal display which is likely to disappoint you. The shaping lacks slickness and looks rather unadorned unlike the overall phone styling which is relatively trendy (apart from the external aerial of course). The radiant green backlighting modernises the greyscale display to some extent.
Care has been taken to keep the physical structure of the phone in good shape. Two little protective coverings at the bottom prevent the flip from exerting too much pressure on the internal display when shutting the phone.
The phone ships with two kinds of batteries- a standard-sized and a slim one, both of which don’t increase the weight of the phone by too much. While the standard battery can withstand more than two days of general use, the slim one will hardly run for a solitary day on same usage.
Navigating through the menus is simple thanks to the helpful icons which guide you in the desired direction. The 4-way navigational key is placed just above the numerical keys and the spacing is pretty much acceptable. This makes dialling numbers and sending messages very simple. SMS is also compatible with the T9 predictive text input.
For PC connectivity you are given the option to use the infrared port while internet surfing is permitted via the WAP browser.
The organiser functions of A300 include alarm, calculator, calendar, to-do etc. Of these, only the calendar feature was below par as the characters in the calendar are too microscopic to be viewed effortlessly by the naked eye.
There are seven pre-loaded games in A300. But among the couple of disappointments evident are the not so novel ringtones and also no facility to download more.
Despite a few hiccups, the easy navigation and friendly displays make it a rather reliable flip phone.

A300 is a A grade phone
I’ve been using this for more than a year and yippee, I’m still enjoying it coz it looks hip, is very very easy to use. The LCD is exceptionally viewable in the dark (even if it is bit small for my liking) thanks to the bright backlighting. Ringtones are wooooonerful, I find SMS a bit slow at times and internet surfing too could have been a bit faster. I haven’t faced any trouble with the infrared feature till date though. If used properly, the phone battery will last long enough and will surely not disappoint you. Wait a minute I forgot to mention a very impressive point of this phone. The voice quality of the phone and reception are among the best at least according to me. From my experience, I can only tell you that this phone rocks and you should own it.
