Samsung P400
Another clamshell from Samsung, P400’s USP lies in its 180 degree rotating digital camera and also a 180 degree rotating display.
While these features look great on paper, in practicality it is not of much use. In fact the swiveling only makes using the phone awkward.
A triband, it has dimensions of 91 x 48 x 23 mm and weighs a hefty 105g.
The internal screen TFD LCD display of 65k colours with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels is crystal clear. Keypad is roomy which facilitates ease of messaging. The blue backlighting makes the phone look beautiful but overall the designing looks too outdated.
The in-built camera, which takes pictures at a resolution of 352 x 288 pixels, incorporates the CCD sensors which are of superior quality compared to CMOS. The 1.2MB memory of P400 has the capacity to hold 100 pictures. Further, the digital zoom and brightness control features are also helpful in enhancing the picture quality.
Using MMS isn’t too much of a headache as images, sound and text can be inserted and sent to many contacts instantly. You are provided with a good 700kb of memory space for MMS. Good news for those frequently using SMS is the phone’s capability to store 200 messages.
P400 encompasses 40-chord polyphonic ringtones of great quality. They are audible enough to be heard even in very noisy surroundings and more can be downloaded. Both the MMF and MIDI format tunes are recognized thanks to the presence of the Yamaha chipset. The vibrator quality of P400 is also strong enough to be felt through most clothing.
Gaming wise, you will find four pre-installed Java games apart from the facility to download more. For browsing purposes, you can make use of WAP 1.2.1.
For connectivity purposes you will have to be content with infrared and USB port.
You can also utilize the organizer functions like alarm clock, calendar, calculator, to-do list and currency converter.
A word of praise for Samsung as this product is shipped with additional extended battery, serial data cable, handsfree headphone and hand strap.
The reception and voice quality of P400 is pretty much up to the desired standard.
According to the makers, P400’s battery will give you a standby time of 100 hours and talktime of more than four hours.
With an unimpressive styling and effectiveness of the swiveling feature not prominent enough, it has to be said that Samsung’s P400 is disappointing.

Unpredictable is the word for Samsung P400
I got this phone a couple of months back. Its performance has been so unpredictable that sometimes I feel I’ve done a gr8 job by purchasing this phone and at other times, I feel really disappointed. It looks really stylish and isn’t too difficult to use. But there are a few teething problems. The screen looks really hazy at times. My camera stops functionally at times even though it takes good pictures when it does work. Swiveling feature is a good idea but doesn’t do anything to improve the phone functionality. Only a few of the ringtones sound good on the ear. Overall, I won’t recommend this phone.
