Samsung’s maiden 3G venture in the UK market, Z107 is sold by orange and Vodafone. A dual colour display, the external screen is home to the general yet important functions like the time, battery and signal strength.

The internal dsiplay, on the other hand, encloses a 2,62,000 colour screen of superior quality with a 176 x 192 pixel resolution.

Styling is very appreciable thanks to the attractive silver-finish. But this is yet another clamshell with the antenna placed on the exterior making it look rather old fashioned. As expected with most clamshells, it’s rather bulky at 120 g with dimensions of 89 x 48 x 25 mm.

Keypad is well laid out with large, prominent buttons and a central navigation key. Menu arrangemnt isn’t the best as it has nine separate icons for different sections and you will have to scan through each and every one of them to get an idea about their utility.

Among the main features of Z107 are the video calling, video messaging and video download facility. The camera present can be rotated to point inwards for video calls and outwards for taking pictures.

The VGA camera is of decent quality with a standard resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. It delivers good results in terms of picture quality with different camera modes and an LED for taking pictures in dark surroundings.

Z107 does not have an MP3 player. Instead, it includes MP3 ringtones recognizing the AAC format

Connectivity is not the best thanks to the absence of Bluetooth. But you can try out the USB cable and infrared which works reasonably well.

There are a few nauseating features about the phone. Weird, loud sounds come out especially when pressing the buttons for dialing. So, it is better to keep this keypad funtion off.

Orange World allows you to download and stream movie trailers, news, traffic updates and not least of all, get online and surf the internet.

You can enjoy the 64-voice polyphonic ringtones. The messaging services include SMS, MMS and e-mail facilitated through POP3, IMAP4, SMTP.

Have fun with the embedded Java games while PIM (Personal Information Management) functions include calendar, alarm, to do and a currency converter. Z107’s phonebook has the capacity of storing 1000 contacts.

With dual band capabilities, it gives talktime of 5 hrs and standby of 130 - 260 hours.

Considering that it has some impressive features and, at the same time, lacks new age technology like Blueetoth, Z017 can be termed as a good entry-level 3G phone from Samsung.
