Sony Ericsson Z600

A clamshell, the Sony Ericsson Z600 has an in-built camera and incorporates most of the features found in a mid-range camera phone.

With a high-class build quality, the phone has dimensions of 90 x 48 x 27 mm and the weight of 106 g makes it rather heavy. Z600 comes with interchangeable covers giving you various options to make the phone even more glittering.

On the exterior you can locate a small black and white display with an unimpressive resolution of 21 x 80 pixels. Thankfully, you are not able to find an antenna popping out (a major nuisance with many clamshells) as it is ingrained.

The internal screen is a 128 x 160 pixel LCD display recognizing more than 65k colours making it rather ideal with ample brightness.

Coming to the keypad arrangement, the buttons are well spread out and using it shouldn’t create too much of a furore. Having said that, you might experience some lag while messaging due to the slow reaction time. Overall, the user interface is very simple with a stylish design to boot.

An integrated camera, visible at the lower end of the phone is a big letdown. While most camera phones have resolutions of 640 x 480 pixels, Z600’s CIF camera delivers a rather disappointing 319 x 288 pixels and as a result, the picture quality is ordinary. Some consolation can be taken from the fact that the camera settings include night-mode, sepia and negative. One strict warning though; unlike many camera phones, this doesn’t have a lens cover and hence extra caution needs to be exercised.

The good news is that Z600 is triband compatible with Bluetooth and IR technology for transfer of data.

Messaging services include the advanced EMS and MMS, apart from SMS. With WAP 2.0 support over GPRS, Z600 also recognizes POP3 and IMAP4 email.

Melody buffs can lend their ears to the 32 voice polyphonic ringtones in addition to composing ringtones courtesy "Music DJ".

For gaming, Z600 is compatible with both JAVA and Mophun based games. The phone itself has quite a number of in-built games.

However, it is not possible to make full use of the above mentioned functions thanks to the lacklustre 2 MB memory.

Standards features like reminders and to-do notes are very customizable.

Essentially, the voice quality and network of Z600 is better than average in most areas.

The battery life is amazing with 12 days of standby and 9 hours of talktime.

At the end of the day, Z600 may have many efficient and attractive features. But a below par camera and a meagre 2 MB memory will certainly not impress too many customers.

A big lesson in how to avoid buying a museum piece
For all its fancy features, barely 8 months after market launch, there isn't anybody willing to buy the Z600 from me, even for 20% off its original shelf-price. I heard a comment that stung but was true nevertheless: "whatcha doin with this antique piece pops? Sell it pronto!" Does Sony Ericsson recall old models? If it does, I'd like to return my Z600.

Surprisingly beautiful clamshell
I am not really impressed with clamshell designs in mobiles. But I came across lots of good reviews about the Z600 and even my friends insisted it is good enough. And now I can proudly say I own the SE Z600. There are hordes of positive features about Z600. The styling is very impressive and the screen to is of gr8 quality. Camera also delivers very satisfactory results. But it’s not all a bed of roses. The dimensions could definitely have been better. Like I have heard about many SE handsets, here too using the T9 format is rather confusing. But still I would definitely recommend the Z600.
