Sony Ericsson Z1010

Sony Ericsson’s first 3G phone, Z1010 is rather bulky weighing 143 g with dimensions of 98x48x28 mm. When opened the clamshell is 180 mm in length. So don’t even think of carrying it in your pocket.

With blue-backlighting, the external screen has 101 x 80-pixel resolution with a pitiable four shades of grey. Don’t be too disappointed though. The inner display holds a 65K-color TFT with an impressive resolution of 176 x 220-pixel.

Keypad isn’t the greatest .While the buttons are well spaced out, they are a bit too deep-seated for comfortable use. Good navigation is supported thanks to the rounded four-directional keys above the numerical buttons.

Design wise, you find a camera button, volume controls, headphone jack, and Memory Stick DUO slot on sides while the infrared port is seen at the base.

User interface of Z1010 is very much speedy and consumer friendly.

Using the VGA camera isn’t very profitable. You have to slant the camera phone in the upward direction to take photos horizontally and photos too have to be viewed in the same way. Another camera present facilities video calls.

Having a pedestrian 480 x 640-pixel, the pictures aren’t up to the mark when placed on the PC. Further, the 1 second shutter lag can often lead to ungainly results. They do offer some valuable shooting options like night mode, effects and preloaded photo frames.

Z1010’s Memory Stick DUO card has very good utility factor as it can be swapped and used for music playback. The MP3 player hang ups on its own for you to attend the incoming call and starts up later after you’re done with answering the call. It is possible to send messages even when you are tuned into the music. However, using the headphone, while is held the in a 2.5mm headphone jack, is prickly.

Z1010 allows you to enjoy MP3 ringtones even as MusicDJ assists users to compose their innovative melodies.

There is no dearth of connectivity options with Bluetooth, infrared, USB and serial cable all enabled. Having only a dualband capacity is definitely an annoying feature.

Running on 1,260mAh Lithium-polymer battery, the manufacturers say it can provide six hours of talktime and be on standby for 200 hours. On average use, the battery lasts for 3 days with charging consuming two hours.

Sony Ericsson’s Z1010 leaves you with mixed feelings. On one hand you have the massiveness, a VGA camera and only dualband capability. Conversely it has an easy to use interface, good speedy performance, great wireless connectivity tools and a few more utilities. The choice is all yours.

Sony Ericsson’s first 3G phone, Z1010 is rather bulky weighing 143 g with dimensions of 98x48x28 mm. When opened the clamshell is 180 mm in length. So don’t even think of carrying it in your pocket.

A decent clamshell
If you are looking for a lightweight piece, the Z1010 isn’t for you. But then, it does have its merits. The user interface of Z1010 is among the most user friendly ones you will find. Most of the functions deliver good results including Bluetooth. I bet you will enjoy the video call functions. On moderate use you’ll get good battery life. But still charging has to be done everyday. The biggest threat is from software bugs. And unfortunately you get quite a number of them. Otherwise, it isn’t a bad piece at all.
