Nokia 6101
All Nokia’s clamshells haven’t very been well appreciated with models like 6170 and 6260 biting the dust. But 6101 is a welcome change in this regard with better styling and design.
The dimensions of 85 x 45 x 24 mm and weighing 97g, though a tad heavy, feel reasonably cosy in the hand. The outer screen display is very comprehensible and instructive while the one on the inside is nice and vivid with a resolution of 128 x 160-pixel and an extensive 65K-color LCD screen.
It’s not all hunky dory though for the users of 6101. The antenna on the exterior, now a redundant feature of mobiles, makes comeback and mars the otherwise impressive styling to some extent. The numeric keypad is not crammed compared to some other handsets, but when pressed the buttons on the keypad are a bit too rigid for comfort.
With most of the functions being pretty basic, it won’t take long to get used to operating the 6101. But the slow speed of some basic operations like attending calls and viewing messages can get to you at times.
Messaging service is pretty simple. In addition you can also able to view a list containing the numbers you have recently messaged to. The prerequisite inclusions these days like Java applications, basic organizational features and GPRS/EDGE technology can also be found in 6101.
One enriched characteristic of this handset which deserves a mention is the facility to increase the font size which will certainly prove to be a boon to the elders using this while sending messages. Furthermore, 6101 also includes the push-to-talk feature which is certainly creating waves in the mobile market.
Provided with 4.4MB of internal memory, the user does not have any expansion choices understandable considering it’s a basic handset. For file transportations you can utilize either the infrared port or USB cable.
With triband capabilities, it delivers good voice quality and call reception. Running on a 760mAh battery, it gives you 2-4 hrs of talktime and 200-350 of standby.
Coming to the camera aspect of this midrange handset, VGA camera doesn’t deliver satisfactory results with only occasional shots taken in the open looking good. You can take self-portraits through the outer display by closing the clamshell. The camera also facilitates video recording with video playback settings like H.263 video and MPEG-4 present.
There is no MP3 player but you can always tune in to FM.
6101 has its demerits no doubt. But this is certainly one of the better clamshells to come out of the Nokia camp.

A good one
There is nothing extraordinary about 6101. But I still appreciate it because it performs most of the functions very accurately. Messaging is simple and designing impressive. Phone is slightly heavy but still very much bearable. I love the push-2-talk feature. Keypad arrangement cud have been a tad better. Ditto with the camera. But looking at most of the phone features u should be reasonably satisfied. Only one big grouse. Why on earth the external antenna. Spoils the excellent design.

Not bad but nothing gr8 either
The Nokia 6101 was supposed to be a superior version of 6610i. While it doesn’t to complete justice there are definitely a few noteworthy features. The display is a bit large and in the process the screen quality also improves. The in-built camera also does you more good than harm. But a digital zoom was definitely required to enhance performance. FM radio can always be tuned into and the reception of Nokia is great as always. Good design & valuable battery strength. If you don’t have the 6610i you can directly go for 6101.
