Nokia 7280 – the crème de la crème of mobile phones

If you hobnob with celebrities and often get invited to parties where the paparazzi always turn up, then don’t leave home without your Nokia 7280. This handset is a most stylish combo of ‘Saks Fifth Avenue’ looks and a decent set of functions. With it, Nokia has created the crème de la crème of cell phones.

While not exactly the Rolls Royce among mobile phones, the 7280 is nevertheless an impressive gadget on most counts. In looks, Nokia has made a clear departure from the candy bar design. There is no keypad. It has a stylish new interface comprising a Navi Spinner. To make a call you use a rotary jog dial and a select button. The process may take some getting used to, but hey, you’re not the type that calls people. You keep getting called by your fans.

You might sometimes find dialing a frustrating task. Nokia might as well have included a dictate-a-number feature. Zero marks for efficiency. The jog dial is better used for browsing.

The features set includes Bluetooth, speakerphone (useful when you’re driving), Class 10 Edge, messaging capabilities, VGA camera, video (only for playback), a voice note, FM radio.

It also has an infrared port that helps you connect to your PC/laptop. Which means: you can connect it to other PDAs and cell phones to exchange pictures.

On the flip side, do consider its minuses: it lacks Java support; texting would be truly taxing; it does not support analog roaming; and the battery is non-chargeable which means - when the battery gets too old you throw the phone out with it. So now you need to ask the price. Priced between £280 and £340; you may not want to throw it away in a few months when a sleeker and more sophisticated model comes along. But if a new model proves to be more irresistible than the 7280, simply pass it on to your lackey with a magnanimous gesture. He’ll be forever grateful.

Essential extras: car charger, travel charger, Bluetooth headset, wired headset and an image viewer.

If you hobnob with celebrities and often get invited to parties where the paparazzi always turn up, then don’t leave home without your Nokia 7280.

Exceptionally brilliant
This is one of the easiest phones to operate. And yes the features too are really good. It’s expensive no doubt but I feel it is worth it. Many told me that sending sms through this will be a headache. But I did not find so at any point of time. Voice activation feature is superb which means I can use by mobile the way I want it just by saying the relevant function. Ringtones r pretty cool. I somehow did not quite like the designing. But I’ll take substance over style any day and that is xactly what this phone is.

frustrating dial system
Strange mobile, really strange... no, no, I do not own this, but was lucky to have seen the demo. The demo encouraged me not to go on with this mobile. I got a nokia 6600 instead. I like the traditional numeric system. I doubt if Nokia 7280 actually sell.
