Lions Gate Films - The Descent (2005)
Coming from Neil Marshall, the director of Dog Soldiers, The Descent is a gruesome and riveting horror tale. Six friends assemble in a remote mountain range for their annual expedition, a caving trip into the interiors of the earth. The group passes through remote caves, taking pleasure from the perilous but stunning environs. But calamity strikes when their path back is clogged-up by a rockfall. Things become worse when they discover that Juno (Natalie Mendoza), a rather outrageous expeditor compared to the others, has brought them to an uncharted cave, and that no one is coming to help them out. Left with no other alternative, they try hard to find another exit.
All are oblivious of the fact that there are numerous atrocious creatures hidden that can exist completely in the dark. As the six friends come to terms with reality, they are forced to fight for themselves only and begin to fear their friends exposing the frailty of humans.
This movie makes use of every possible tactic like gloom, claustrophobia, distortion and dreadful beings to scare the hell out of the viewers’.
The whole cast comes out as winner in the end successfully creating a terrified environment around them. Natalie Mendoza as Juno is particularly impressive in bringing her wage character to light.
This dark, horror flick is certain to send shivers down your spine.

Never before have I seen such style in horror flicks
Neill Marshal deserves a pat on the back for executing this gloomy adventure-that-went-awry' story idea with panache; Marshall has a distinctive and impressive style. The effects are simple but effective, makiing you curious at times and chilling you to the bone at others. The performances were disappointing. I'm surprised, because horror film acting requires such a simple briefing: look convincingly scared. But none of the cast succeeds.

A horrifying experience… in the true sense
The Descent is a great horror film coming at the back of some not-so impressive ones likes House of Wax which was nothing more than patchy. All six woven in the movie play a great part in this scary adventure. The feeble human relationships are brought to the fore after the rockfall takes place and all have to save themselves from the monstrous creatures. The film gets a bit dull in phases time and again your interest is rekindled thanks to the exceptionally dark mood of the flick. The acting, camera angles at crucial moments and gruesome scenes all make it a terrific horror fare.
