A good buy
I would recommend this camera to beginners. HC1 is ideal for persons who want to develop there skills and go on to higher versions. The greatest thing about HC1 is that it gives you clear visuals and comes closest to film form.

Great for high-res video
The video you capture on this camera will be great fun to watch on the huge plasma screen of your home theater TV. And considering HD is the next gen thing, I think this camera is a good investment (about a grand or thereabouts).

waste of money
Sony Handycam HDR-HC1 is a thorough disappointment right from the word go. It has the same old crap- a 25 megabit data rate like the DV’s. How bad is this? The MPEG-2 cannot be even be edited directly. One has to take the pains to convert it to some other form and then recompress it. The design also looks terribly outdated according to me. No 24P acquisition should be enough for you to make your mind up on whether you want to own this or not
