Multimedia mobility: Samsung SGH-E720
This is one clamshell mobile that is more suitable as an MP3 player. It is also reasonably good at taking pictures, videos and yes - making calls too. We’d say for around £220 it’s the best handheld cellular device of its type.
It’s thin and weighing no more than 90g, it’s possibly the lightest and smallest mobile phone that can be regarded as a decent multimedia device. With dimensions like: 91mm x 45mm x 23mm it easily fits into small pockets.
It is shipped with a Bluetooth headset (stereo) and a mini USB connector to connect to your computer.
One of the many great features of this phone is that the MP3 controls are on the outside of the phone. Under the outer screen are three buttons for choosing and playing music. You don’t have to open the clamshell to operate the player. Just hold down the play button and your list of tracks will appear on the screen. Tap the play button again to play after selecting. Volume control is also easy when you want to attend a call – just turn down the rocker on the side of the handset.
Its features include a 1 megapixel camera, 4x digital zoom and 88.5MB of memory. Of this capacity, 80MB is allocated to music, images and video, 4MB to Java, 3MB to email and 1.5MB to MMS messages. You cannot expand this memory which means your library of music will be limited, plus you will have to keep creating space for new images and videos if you use the camera often.
Another good feature of the set is the bright LED camera flash. The camera can be operated with the shortcut button but to access the rest of the camera controls, you will have to open the clamshell. Camera controls include image resolution, self-timer (3/5/10 seconds), filters (greyscale, negative, sepia, embossed, antique, moonlight and fog) and a choice of frames for stills. The flash can also be kept continuously on for taking videos.
Most UK operators offer this handset with their services for a £15 per month contract.

Superb sound quality.
That’s only for the music. The stereo headset provides excellent quality sound. The sound of calls is so-so. I like the web browser and the digital clock on the outside screen, but I guess I have to keep the clock off coz’ it consumes power unnecessarily.

Why didn’t somebody tell me 88MB is too little?
I heard that phones with 4GB are soon going to replace these Mobile phone-MP3 players. Anyway, I don’t resent this phone all that much. It’s slim, small and lightweight and I’m getting quite used to it. But I do hate the limited memory and you cannot even enhance it. I have to keep deleting old image files to make room for new images and video.

A little better than standard mobile-MP3 phones.
I’d say the company has paid more attention to the design of this product than to its features. While dialling a number every digit pops up with a different colour and while playing the MP3 you have this equalizer. Wish the company had provided a cable for connecting to the PC.
