‘Good mornings’ with Goodmans GCR1930DAB
Here’s one egg that sits cozily on your bedside table and wakes you up with music: Goodmans GCR1930DAB – a DAB radio alarm clock. It effectively replaces hissing buzzers and the shrill ringing of other alarm clocks.
It’s a poor cousin of other DABs, although priced like it was an aristocratic one. At £70, it is a more pleasant alarm clock than other gadgets in the type. It is certainly better looking, if not better sounding.
A toggle switch gives you the option to be woken up by music or buzzer and snooze and sleep function. Pressing down the preset button will bring up the menu on the screen which will give you 20 preset slots.
You may resent the ‘so-so’ radio quality, but then that’s not what this gadget is about. Audiophiles, please discontinue reading this article. This is just an up-market alarm clock, period.
Of course, it has it pluses, and a couple of minuses, which we need to present fairly to help you make an informed purchase decision. So let’s list out the pluses first:
It has big clock display – the LCD, green-against-black, is huge and clearly visible fifteen away. Its battery option means you need not worry about resetting the clock when the power goes off. It also means you will still be woken up on time if the power goes off while you sleep.
Just tune into your favourite radio station and set the alarm, simple. Just press the Scan button and you will find your radio station. The radio reception is good even when the aerial isn’t up. The aerial is flexible which means you can tuck it out of view behind the bedside table.
On the downside, like we said the sound quality is not so great as the speaker is tiny and set behind the gadget. The other drawback and an important one, is: it will not time itself by finding the correct time from radio signals like other DABs do. With Goodmans GCR1930DAB you have to program the time yourself.

Cool Gadget
Certain alarms go shrieking wild at six in the morning. The good man is not just cozy but has a nice ring to it that you just cannot resist waking up and getting out of bed. I love this extremely cool gadget. You should have one too by your bedside.
Thanks.

No technical help
I had problems -the volume buttons would sometimes scroll through the stations and "mute" would appear on the screen with no sound. The instruction manual was almost a nothing and didn't mention "mute". I emailed the Goodmans helpline but got no reply. I telephoned the helpline 08708730080 and was told there was no one to help. I took it back to the shop and was given a refund. Sound was clear with the huge aerial and it found a lot of stations.

Awful design!
Sound is fine for a bedside clock radio. Controls very fiddly and poorly designed - seem to be the output of somebody on work experience! The on off switch is hidden away at the bottom of the right side of the unit and acessibility is very difficult. Setting the time is primitive - fast foward and slow back buttons. Controls not laid out in any logical order and poorly marked. Instruction book sketchy and diagrams have references in tiny print.
Snooze button placed on top of unit gets pressed inadvertently every time a control is attempted to operate.

Waking up to news makes my day.
Nothing gets me going like the morning news and a cup of coffee. The cuppa comes later, but waking up to the newsreader’s pleasant voice, (next time I will try and catch her name) makes my day.

Don’t they give ear plugs with this one?
My husband packed away the old alarm clock and tunes into this radio alarm at night. Every morning I wake up to some rock music instead of the usual buzzing. At first I thought it was our kids turning up the volume of the TV. I guess I will need to get used to it, or sleep with ear plugs.
