Point-n-shoot perfection: Fujifilm’s FinePix Z1

Most people who use a point-&-shoot camera have always resented the great divide between themselves and professional photographers. Here’s one digicam that, while making no pretense to bridge that divide, promises pictures and video of an impressive quality. The FinePix Z1 from FujiFilm.

It’s ultra compact; has a large reinforced 2.5 in LCD screen; is fast; easy to navigate; and last but not the least - is reasonably priced. If we were to recommend the perfect digicam for a beginner, then, without a doubt, it would be the FinePix Z1. This digicam is completely dummy-proof, dispensing with the need for ‘expert’ guidance or instruction.

This stylish camera is especially strong in low light, so first-timers are likely to end up thinking themselves naturally gifted photographers. You can expect pictures whose 8” x 10” prints will suggest of a professional expertise.

This 5-megapixel camera is also good at capturing VGA (640x480) video clips. With a 1 GB XD Card (essential) you can take video clips of up to 15 minutes or 400 still images on 4meg. One can expect low image noise at high ISO settings.

To be fair to our nit-picking colleagues, we must present this camera’s downsides too. While taking close-ups, focusing takes a little longer than you would like. It might be a good idea to backup a step or two.

Also, there is no view-finder and the zoom lens is non-extendable, but then such shortcomings are common among ultra-compact digicams. The absence of a view-finder is made up for by the LCD screen which offers clarity even in bright sunlight.

Then, it doesn’t have continuous-shooting mode; and no fine-tuning tools. To sum up, the good points of this camera outweigh the bad, earning it the rating 9 out of 10.

Dim light pictures are disappointing
This camera comes with some very good features. It’s reasonably compact in size and seems like it has got a very good build quality too. I say this b’coz I have dropped it on exactly five occasions and it is still functioning properly. Even the pictures taken in bright light are excellent. However, it falters in a big way when it comes to clicking pictures in the dark as they produce highly inaccurate results. If u don’t care abt the night pictures, this is a very nice choice. But if, like me, you need gr8 pictures in dark conditions, look somewhere else.

Luv ur site, always fair in ur reviews. Is some comsumer watchdog at work here?
In the past couple of months, I have always relied on ur reviews before placing an order for any electronics item. You guys post ruthless in ur reviews. Finding flaws that us or'nary mortals would never notice. Luv u guys 'cos it saves us much post-sales heartburn. But this time what went wrong? This review sucks. And so does the product. Hey, I found this as just one ordinary digicam. I'd rate it no higher than 5 our of 25!

mixed bag
I have tried my friend’s Fujifilm FinePix Z1 and have mixed views about it. Let’s start with the positives. It’s style personified and the 2.5 inch LCD is very useful. I also noticed that it does not create that much noise and is quite efficient in regards to the time used up while shooting. But it lacks versatility. There are hardly any adjustment setting options. While there are no manual controls, even the the scene-modes are nothing to rave about.
