A click ahead of point n shoot: Sony Cyber Shot DSC-S90

Just because this model has a 4-megapixel sensor and 3X zoom, don’t just brush it aside as a typical entry level digital camera. It’s a lot better: with a large LCD screen, above average picture quality, reasonably good performance even in low light and quick response.

Sony has reasonably explored the widening scope of digicams with this point-&-shoot model. In fact, the sum total of its features tells us that the S90 is streets ahead of the other cameras in its ‘S’ series. Apart from the 4-megapixel sensors and 3X optical zooms, which are common to all the models in the series, the S90’s 2.5-in screen is much larger than the S40 and S60 which have 1.5-in and 2-in screens respectively. The S90 also supports add-on conversion lenses.

The camera has vindicated all reviewers who had said that you can expect much more from inexpensive cameras. You can take the S90 and go shooting virtually anything you like. You will need a Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro card of at least 64 MB capacity. It can take video clips (640X480) at 30fps (frames per second). The performance is decent and the results - above average, with excellent colour reproductions, although the pictures do seem a tad soft.

On the downside, there are a few features (or lack of them) that more experienced camera users are not going to like, such as less than optimal close-up capability and very few manual settings to maneuver the controls for optimizing picture quality.

Then there is the issue of battery charging time. Its batteries are likely to try your patience.

Priced between £96 and £113, it certainly offers a lot more than standard digicams in this price range.

A simple digicam for simple folks
That’s how I would describe the Sony Cyber Shot S90. My other snapshot camera is a non-digital one which I had purchased many years ago. I used to take it along every time I went out of town, which is quite often as I’m a traveling businessman. With the S90 I don’t need to make room in my briefcase, it’s compact and light and the results are certainly better than my efforts with the manual, non-digital camera. And operating it is so simple. I’d say it offers value for money.

Big LCD
Okay, so it’s fast and has a big LCD screen. But I would have liked it better if there were more manual controls. I mean - how do I control over-white balance and aperture? Still, I’d say it’s better than standard digicams in the same price range.

I have enjoyed shooting outdoors. Can’t say if I would recommend it to anybody, not before I use it for another month. But by then I’m sure there would be another camera that is even better.

You don’t need genius to figure out this one
I’m a professional table-top photographer and my teenaged nephew nagged the hell out of me to use my equipment. He is absolutely clumsy, slow on the uptake and a certified pain in the neck. I would not dare let him come near my expensive cameras and lights. So I gifted him the Sony Cyber Shot S90. And ever since, he’s been off my back and shooting away to glory. Of course, I checked out the product myself first, and would recommend it with confidence to all ‘novice-photographers’ (the politically correct term for dummies).
