A Budgeted Shooter

A Budgeted Shooter The Olympus D-545 camera is cased in a strong silver coloured plastic body that looks sturdy enough for mishandlers. Therefore, you needn’t get upset if your kid knocks it down a few times! It comes with a retractable lens along with an integral lens cover, which means you might not need a carrying case also.

The camera’s shooting and playback buttons together with the mode dial, the zoom button and the delete button are strategically placed on one side of the camera’s back panel and one can easily operate it with the right thumb. The Olympus D-545 does not weigh too heavy either, at 6.7-ounces.

Even though this camera does not have an optical viewfinder, it sports an 1.8-inch LCD that is sufficient for shot compositions. Despite its small size, the LCD is quite bright and performs reasonably well when it is out in the sun.

However, one has to compromise with the Olympus D as far as features are concerned. With hardly any extras, this shooter comes with an assortment of automatic scene modes, comprising of Portrait, Self-Portrait, Landscape, as well as the Night Scene mode, Sport mode, Landscape Portrait and Night Portrait option. Additionally, it has a 320x240 video-recording mode along with a burst mode that can capture about 9 photos in 6.6 seconds.

The lens of this camera is encouragingly good against the more expensive ones. Having an aperture of f/2.8 to f/4.9, the lens seems relatively efficient in snapping low-light pictures. On the other end, the D-545 does reflect its unintelligent side when it reverts to its photo-quality default setting after the camera is switched off after use. So, you got to be prepared to select your preferred quality settings every time you wield your camera.

Still, we shouldn’t be too harsh with the Olympus D-545 considering its highly affordable price. Tests show the camera performing better than average and its wake-up-to-first-shot time of 3.7 seconds is indeed commendable. Moreover, 2.1 seconds as its shot-to-shot time devoid of flash and 2.3-second shot-to-shot time with the flash can be considered quite fast even if compared to all classes of consumer-friendly digital cameras. It also offers good color precision, although the accuracy of its focus as well as sharpness in photographs is not as satisfactory as one would want to achieve.
